How to Care for Resin Jewelry?

Fine jewelry creation and care is a field I never would have imagined researching for a career, but after I found myself nurturing a talent for the creation of memorial jewelry, I found myself diving headfirst into everything that accompanied it. First and foremost, resin jewelry and its care is not information that is commonly known, even those who find themselves in possession of many pieces of fine jewelry, but it is a material that is commonly used not just in the creation of memorial jewelry but in fine jewelry as well. Because resin is the second primary component in the setting of my pieces, I do want to make sure all of the information for its care and preservation are readily available to my clients. Here are some tips and tricks for how to get the most longevity out of your piece, and keep it looking like new throughout all of life’s adventures.

Scrapes

Try to avoid bumping and scratching or sleeping in your resin jewelry. This could damage your jewelry piece. If your piece has an accident, pop us a photo and we will give you some advice. We can repair, long as the resin has not had a reaction to something.

Water

Do NOT submerge your jewelry pieces in water. Resin is NOT waterproof, only water-resistant. So please remember to remove your jewelry before showers, swimming, washing up etc.

Sunlight

Store your jewelry out of direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the resin to discolor and soften.

Smoking

If your piece is in regular contact with smoke it will usually be yellow. However, some of our smoking resin jewelry clients have worn their pieces for years without discoloration.

Chemicals

Avoid exposing your jewelry to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. This includes perfume, hair spray, cleaning solutions, nail polish remover, antibacterial hand sanitizer, etc. Solvents will react with the epoxy and cause it to become scaly, yellow, chip, or break down completely.

Metal Care

Coating Gold will usually tarnish eventually. We use 5 layers of coating color that keep stronger than normal ones and are more tarnish-resistant. Jewelry will tarnish faster under certain conditions. Humidity, air quality, even body chemistry will affect how quickly it tarnishes. Your order includes a little polishing cloth for use on the metal. Gently rub it on your earring, pendant rings, etc to bring out the shine.

Storage

When you want to store your jewelry, it is best to make sure it is in an airtight container whether it is a small bag, jewelry box, or both. Store the container in a cool, dark, and dry area.
